You cannot use IE to connect to a Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Administration web site and then connect to another Virtual Server

When you connect to the VS Administration Web site, Internet Explorer passes the authentication credentials or the token to the VS service (vssrvc.exe). Then, the VS service impersonates the user. However, another level of impersonation is performed if Internet Explorer is configured to prompt for a username and for a password. Because two levels of impersonation are not possible unless you set up constrained delegation, access to the VS Web Application fails.

IE7 stops responding if a modal dialogue box is open when you try to redraw an IE7 window

A modal dialog box is open when you try to redraw a Windows Internet Explorer 7 window by using a script call in the main window. In this case, Windows Internet Explorer 7 stops responding (hangs).

To resolve this problem, install the most current cumulative security update for Internet Explorer.

HOTFIX: Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista starts to render a Web page before the handling of the "onload" event has finished

This problem occurs because Internet Explorer 7 processes the onload event incorrectly on a Windows Vista-based computer when protected mode is enabled.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/935851

HOTFIX: You cannot add a Web site to the "Trusted Sites" zone when IE7 is installed, even when the user account belongs to the Administrators Group

A computer that has IE7 installed is running Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP, or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 in an Active Directory domain environment. However, the Add button in the Trusted sites dialog box is unavailable. You cannot add a Web site to the "Trusted sites" zone even when the current user account belongs to the Administrators group.

This problem occurs if the "Security Zones: Use only machine settings" Group Policy setting is enabled.

When Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 in installed, members of the Administrators group can configure the "Trusted sites" zone regardless of whether the "Security Zones: Use only machine settings" Group Policy setting is enabled.

This problem occurs because the behavior of the Internet Options dialog box has changed in Internet Explorer 7. When the "Security Zones: Use only machine settings" Group Policy setting is enabled, you cannot use Internet Options to configure zone settings.

HOTFIX: An internet shortcut does not display the correct icon in IE7

If when you create an Internet shortcut, you specify an icon path that includes a system variable, IE7 will show a generic icon.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/935779

HOTFIX: Session cookies may be lost after you open a file that has a local file path or a UNC file path in IE7

When you use Windows Internet Explorer 7 to open a file that has a local file path or a UNC file path, session cookies may be lost after later operations. These later operations may include opening a new window or closing a new window.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/935778

HOTFIX: The buffer size of the InternetQueryOptionW function is half of its actual size if you use INTERNET_OPTION_URL as the second parameter in IE7

This problem occurs because of an error in the Wininet.dll file and does not occur in earlier versions of Internet Explorer

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/935777

HOTFIX: The InternetQueryOptionW function returns a value of true when you use the INTERNET_OPTION_URL option flag as the second parameter in IE7

This problem occurs because of an error in the Wininet.dll file and does not occur in earlier versions of Internet Explorer.

You receive a script error in IE7 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP when you include certain characters to specify a window name parameter in the "Window.Open" method

On a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer or a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer that is running Windows Internet Explorer 7, you receive an Internet Explorer script error.

This symptom occurs if the following conditions are true:

• You use the Window.Open method in Internet Explorer 7.

• You specify a window name parameter in the Window.Open method that includes a character such as Katakana-Hiragana Prolonged Sound Mark (Unicode character code U+30FC).

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/935775

HOTFIX: You cannot open a Web page by using IE7 if the URL of the Web page contains non-ASCII characters

You cannot open a Web page by using Windows Internet Explorer 7. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

• In the Internet Options dialog box, the Send UTF-8 URLs check box is cleared on the Advanced tab.
• The URL of the Web page contains non-ASCII characters.
• The Web page contains frame contents.
• After the HTTP response is received, each element of the frame is redirected.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/935729

HOTFIX: When you access an external document by using a link in an inline frame in Internet Explorer 7, the value of the document object is returned as "undefined"

You create a Web page in an inline frame. The Web page contains a link to an external document such as a PDF file. You use a script block to reference the document object. You access the external document by using the link in the inline frame in Windows Internet Explorer 7.

In this scenario, the value of the document object is returned as "undefined."

This problem does not occur if you use an inline script to reference the document object.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/935579

HOTFIX: When you try to use Windows IE7 to display a Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file on a local computer, IE7 cannot display the SVG file

When you try to use Windows Internet Explorer 7 to display a Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file on a local computer, Internet Explorer 7 cannot display the SVG file. This problem occurs if the Web page that is used to display the SVG file has the following characteristics:

• It contains an <embed > tag.
• It uses the Mark of the Web (MOTW) feature to bypass the Local Machine Zone Lockdown feature.

This problem also occurs when you try to display Macromedia Shockwave Flash (.swf) files. This problem does not occur in Internet Explorer 6.

After you install this hotfix, you have to create and configure the Iexplore.exe registry entry. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_EMBEDTAG_MOTW_KB935575

3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

4. Type iexplore.exe for the new value, and then press ENTER.

5. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.

6. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Decimal under Base.

7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

8. Exit Registry Editor.

HOTFIX: Windows IE7 may crash when you vist a Web site

Windows Internet Explorer 7 may crash when you use it to visit a Web site. This problem occurs when the following registry subkey is enabled:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\UseCoInstall

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/935544

FIX: After you install IE7, the Inetinfo.exe process may stop responding on a computer that is running both Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and IIS 6.0

When this problem occurs, you may receive an error message in the System log in Event Viewer. The error message resembles the following:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7031
Description:
The IIS Admin Service service terminated unexpectedly.

Error message when you try to uninstall IE7: "Setup cannot copy the file Ieeula.chm"

If the Ieeula.chm is missing from the Windows/IE7 folder, replace the Ieeula.chm file by using the Ieeula.chm file in the Windows/Help folder. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, type %windir%\help in the Open box, and then click OK.

2. Right-click the Ieeula.chm file, and then click Copy.

3. Exit Windows Explorer.

4. Click Start, type %windir%\IE7 in the Open box, and then click OK.

5. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

If you don't have an Ieeula.chm available, and can't source one from elsewhere, the alternative is a System Restore.

There is no word on why this file may be missing, although I have seen reports of other chm files being affected, including ieakmmc.chm, iesupp.chm, iexplore.chm, inetres.adm and html.iec

Error message when you try to use a dial-up connection in Windows IE7 on a Windows Vista based computer: "Cannot write to the telephone book"

On a Windows Vista-based computer, you try to connect to a network by using a dial-up connection in Windows Internet Explorer 7. However, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

Cannot write to the telephone book.
Error 624 : Telephone book file cannot be updated.
The dial-up connection attempt is unsuccessful.

HOTFIX: You may be unable to use an FTP application to upload a file to a remote server on a computer that has Internet Explorer 7 installed

On a computer that has Windows Internet Explorer 7 installed, you may be unable to use an FTP application to upload a file to a remote server.

This problem occurs if the application is based on WinINet FTP functions.

This problem occurs because of an access violation that is caused by the InternetWriteFile WinINet API function.

When you use an application that is based on WinINet FTP functions to upload a file to a remote server, the remote file is created by using the APPE FTP command. However, when the operating system tries to use the InternetWriteFile function to write the file, this access violation occurs.

The Open button does not appear in the "File Download - Security Warning" dialogue box when you try to download a certificate file in IE7

You try to download a certificate (.cer) file in Windows Internet Explorer 7 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003. In this scenario, the Open button does not appear in the File Download - Security Warning dialog box. Instead, the Find button appears.

Notes

• If you save the certificate file to disk and then open the file, the file opens successfully.

• This problem does not occur in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. This problem also does not occur on computers that are running Windows XP, even if you use Internet Explorer 7.

The HTML events may not work correctly when a managed application tries to interact with an HTML document by using the MSHTML primary interop assembly component

In Windows Internet Explorer, a managed application tries to interact with an HTML document by using the MSHTML primary interop assembly (Microsoft.mshtml.dll) component. In this scenario, the HTML events may not work correctly. Typically, the MSHTML primary interop assembly component is incorporated into the Microsoft Visual Studio IDE for internal use. However, using the component in end-user applications is not supported.

Error message when you try to open an ActiveX control-bsed MIME handler in IE7: "Invalid character"

When you try to open a Microsoft ActiveX control-based MIME handler in Windows Internet Explorer 7, you may receive the following script error message:

Line: Line number
Char: Character number
Error: Invalid character
Code: Code number

Line: Line number
Char: Character number
Error: Object expected
Code: Code number

For example, you may receive this script error message when you try to open a Macromedia Shockwave Flash (.swf) file or when you try to open an Audio Video Interleaved (.avi) file.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

• The file is located in the Internet Web zone or in the Intranet Web zone.
• The Allow active content to run in files on My Computer check box is selected in Internet Explorer 7.

Note To locate this check box in Internet Explorer 7, click Internet Options on the Tools menu, and then click the Advanced tab. Under Security, you can see the Allow active content to run in files on My Computer check box.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/934366

Error message when you call the window.open method from a Web page to open an active document in Internet Explorer: "permission denied"

When Internet Explorer uses an Active Document server, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or Adobe Reader, to display a document in an Internet Explorer window, the page contains only the active document window and not the MSHTML. Therefore, the window object that is returned by the window.open method is disconnected and is invalidated. Only the IWebBrowser2 browser frame and the active document remain in the new window. Because the methods of the IWebBrowser2 interface are not exposed to scripts, you cannot call the methods of the browser frame by using a script.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/934365

You cannot resize or reposition a WebBrowser control window in IE7

This behavior occurs if the script on the WebBrowser control contains calls to any of the following methods:

• window.moveTo
• window.moveBy
• window.resizeTo
• window.resizeBy

A security change in Internet Explorer 7 prevents the WebBrowser control from spoofing the host application. Therefore, these methods do not work for applications that host the WebBrowser control.

Cyrillic letters are not displayed correctly in Web forms when you use IE7

In this scenario, special characters and numbers appear instead of Cyrillic letters. For example you may see the following entry instead of Cyrillic letters:

:::::;;;;;;?????444444>>>>

This problem occurs when the BitComet 0.84 program installs the BitComet Helper (BitCometBHO_1.1.2.7.dll) Internet Explorer 7 add-on. The BitComet Helper add-on prevents the correct use of Cyrillic letters.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/934362

Warning message when you upgrade Adobe Flash Player in IE7 on a Windows Vista computer: "This program will open outside of Protected Mode"

This problem occurs because the Ieuser.exe process in Internet Explorer 7 protected mode does not automatically detect changes to elevation policy. An elevation policy consists of a series of registry keys and registry values. These registry keys and registry values tell protected mode how to handle the elevation of a specific process to a higher integrity level.

To resolve this problem, install the most current cumulative security update for Internet Explorer.

Streaming content stops, and you may receive an error message when you click "Next" in Windows Media Player

I'll be honest - this is one of the most unhelpful KB articles that I have encountered. Basically, the KB says the problem occurs when IE7 is installed, and that Microsoft is aware of the problem, and that's the entirety of the advice that they give.

In Microsoft Windows Media Player, you play streaming content from a Microsoft Windows Media Services 9 Series server. When you click Next to skip the content, the content stops. You may receive the following error message:

Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

You might not receive this error message, depending on when the content switches to the next unit of content.

This problem occurs when Windows Internet Explorer 7 is installed on the computer on which you are viewing the content.

HOTFIX: The CPU usage on the computer may increase to 100 percent when you try to print an HTML page in IE7

In Windows Internet Explorer 7, you try to print an HTML page that contains a table. When you do this, the HTML page is not printed successfully. Additionally, the CPU usage on the computer may increase to 100 percent.

When you click Print Preview to display a preview of the HTML page, Internet Explorer 7 may lay out the HTML page multiple times. Additionally, the preview of the HTML page is not displayed correctly.

This problem is more likely to occur if the overflow-y attribute is applied to the HTML page.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/933264

Error message when you try to print an Office document that appears in a frame in IE7: "The document in this frame cannot be printed as laid out"

To resolve this problem, either install the cumulative security update for Internet Explorer or the apply the solution that is appropriate for the operating system. For example, you can install the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer 7. Or, if the computer is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you can install Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.

A Web age may not be displayed correctly when you use the zoom feature in IE7

When you use the zoom feature in Windows Internet Explorer 7 to zoom in or to zoom out on a specific Web page, the Web page may not be displayed correctly.

For example, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

• On the Web page, there is an image between text strings and an input object, such as a button or a text box. When you zoom in or zoom out on the Web page, the text strings may be truncated, or they may not be displayed. This problem occurs because the input object overlaps the text strings.

• On the Web page that you are viewing, there is a text string or a table that has a border. When you zoom in or zoom out on the Web page, the border may not be displayed.

• The Web page contains content that uses the "DISPLAY:block;VERTICAL-ALIGN:bottom;" parameters. For example, the Web page contains the style for an "A" tag. When you zoom in or zoom out on the Web page, there may be an extra hyphen (-) that is displayed after the strings or after the images. To verify the decoration of an "A" tag, click View Source on the Tools menu.

• When you put the focus on a link object on the Web page, and then you move the focus to another link object, the focus position may not be on the display position of the link object.

• You cannot zoom in or zoom out on any part of the Web page that is drawn by an ActiveX control.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/933053

HOTFIX: An application uses the Favorites folder of IE7 as the root directory when the application calls the DoOrganizeFavDlg function

This problem occurs because Internet Explorer 7 ignores the specified pszInitDir parameter.

IE7 may exit unexpectedly when multiple tabs are open, and you close a tab that contains a non-HTML file

This problem occurs when the Yahoo! toolbar is installed, and the version of the toolbar is between 6.0.0.0 and 6.3.4.0.

To resolve this problem, install the following security updates:

• MS07-016: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer
• MS07-027: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/932930

HOTFIX: When you try to open an FTP site by using a Web proxy in IE7, you cannot open the FTP site

When you try to open an FTP site by using a Web proxy in Windows Internet Explorer 7, you cannot open the FTP Web site. This behavior occurs if the Web site URL contains the following entry:

domain\username

You may be unable open the FTP site even after you replace the backslash (\) by using its URL-encoded form (%5c)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/932562

IE7 closes immediately when you start IE7
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/932540

HOTFIX: When you print an e-mail message in either Office Outlook 2003 or Outlook Express, the printed message is so small that it is unreadable

This problem occurs because the "Shrink to Fit" feature in Outlook 2003 or in Outlook Express is automatically enabled. Therefore, if the contents of the e-mail message are wider than the width of the paper, the size of the message is reduced to fit on the paper. If the size of the message is reduced too much, the printed message becomes so small that it is unreadable.

Web page content does not update as expected when you move the pointer into an inline frame in Internet Explorer 7

You view a Web page in Windows Internet Explorer 7. The Web page contains an inline frame that is created by using an <iframe> element. The content of the Web page changes when you move the pointer over a section of the Web page. For example, additional text appears. In this scenario, the Web page content may not be updated when you move the pointer again. For example, the additional text may continue to appear on the screen unexpectedly when you move the pointer over the inline frame.

Persistent cookies are not shared between Internet Explorer 7 and Office applications in Windows Vista

When Office applications communicate with the Web server, they do not send persistent cookies that are saved by Internet Explorer back to the Web server. This behavior may result in the following situations for a Web application that expects these cookies:

• Loss of session state
• Loss of transactional awareness

Missing temporary files

Content that is downloaded by Internet Explorer appears to be missing in the temporary-files cache. This situation may cause the following symptoms:

• Files are downloaded two times before they are opened. (That is, double GET requests are made.)
• Changes that are made to the file in one session may not be available to the other session. Therefore, the behavior of a Web application may be altered.

Authentication prompts or logon-page redirections

In the following scenarios, certain Single Sign-On (SSO) solutions that rely on persistent cookies for cross-application awareness may not work as expected:

• An Office application tries to open the document from a Web-service-aware document library such as a SharePoint site.
• An Office application tries to save the document from a Web-service-aware document library such as a SharePoint site.
• An Office application tries to interact with the document from a Web-service-aware document library such as a SharePoint site.

Therefore, these SSO solutions may prompt the user for authentication information. Alternatively, these SSO solutions may redirect the user to a forms logon page.

HOTFIX: A Web site cannot set a cookie if the Domain attribute is in uppercase characters and has an odd number of characters in IE7

In Windows Internet Explorer 7, a Web site cannot set a cookie if the following conditions are true:

• The Domain attribute is in uppercase characters.
• The Domain attribute has an odd number of characters.

Note If the Domain attribute starts with a dot, this dot is not included in the number of characters. For example, if the cookie tries to set the .EUROPE.CORP.CONTOSO.COM domain name, the cookie cannot be set. This domain name has 23 characters.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/932044

HOTFIX: A Web site cannot set a cookie if the Domain attribute is in uppercase characters and has an odd number of characters in IE6

In Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, a Web site cannot set a cookie if the following conditions are true:

• The Domain attribute is in uppercase characters.
• The Domain attribute has an odd number of characters.

Note If the Domain attribute starts with a dot, this dot is not included in the number of characters. For example, if the cookie tries to set the .EUROPE.CORP.CONTOSO.COM domain name, the cookie cannot be set. This domain name has 23 characters.

Multiple windows open when you start IE7 after you upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista

This issue may occur if Internet Explorer was configured to include a trusted Web site in Windows XP. When you upgrade to Windows Vista, Internet Explorer 7 inherits the list of trusted Web sites from Windows XP.

In Internet Explorer 7, trusted Web sites and Web sites that are not trusted do not appear in the same window. By default, protected mode is disabled for Web sites that are registered as trusted Web sites. Protected mode is enabled for Web sites that are not registered as trusted Web sites.

When Internet Explorer 7 starts for the first time, it is redirected from a Microsoft Web site to the http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx Web site. This Web site is used to set various configuration settings. If you register "*.microsoft.com" as a trusted Web site, Internet Explorer 7 starts with protected mode disabled to access the Microsoft Web site. Then, Internet Explorer 7 redirects you to the home page that is set in the preferences. However, if the home page is not a trusted Web site, protected mode is enabled. Therefore, a new Internet Explorer 7 window opens.

Warning message when a user tries to connect to a secure Web site by using Internet Explorer 7: "There is a problem with this website's security certificate"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931850

To be honest, I find this article to be unhelpful. It does not mention, for example, that Windows Small Business Server 2003 uses unsigned certificates by default, and that every organisation that uses OWA, and SBS's self signed certificate, is going to have this problem.

I blogged about the problem back in January 2006, have screenshots, and show you how to resolve the issue:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2006/01/31/82198.aspx

It is important to note that Windows Vista users will need to run IE7 as administrator to see the "install certificate" button.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930802

I disagree strongly with the statement in the Knowledge Base article that says: "Note Internet Explorer 7 may be installed automatically if Automatic Updates is enabled on your computer."

No no no no no!!! IE7 will *not* install automatically, even if Automatic Updates is enabled and set to download and install automatically. You *will* see the IE7 installation splash screen, the one that gives you the option to "install now", "install later" or "do not install".

You cannot visit a Web site if you pass the address through an ActiveX control in IE7 that accepted extended characters as parameters

After you upgrade to Windows Internet Explorer 7, you may receive the following HTTP status message from a server:

404 File not found

You receive this status message if you pass the URL address through an ActiveX control that accepts extended characters as parameters.

This issue occurs when an ActiveX control uses the InternetOpenUrl API, an API that Microsoft Internet Extensions for Win32 (wininet.dll) exposes. When the ActiveX control passes extended characters from the URL as a parameter to the InternetOpenUrl API, extended characters are removed from the URL. The resulting URL address will be rejected from the Web server, and you will receive a "404 File not found" HTTP status message from the Web server.

The changes that were implemented in Internet Explorer 7 included a fix that addressed an international character encoding issue. This fix cannot be removed from Internet Explorer 7. Additionally, the fix to Internet Explorer 7 has insufficient context to enable Internet Explorer 7 to selectively behave as earlier versions of Internet Explorer behaved.

To work around this issue, you can use an ActiveX control that uses the InternetCanonicalizeUrl API before the URL is passed to the InternetOpenUrl API. The InternetCanonicalizeUrl will convert extended characters into the escaped versions of these characters, and the InternetOpenUrl API will not remove these escaped characters.

You may want to contact the manufacturer of the ActiveX control that exhibits this behavior to obtain a version that uses this workaround.

ActiveX controls are inactive when you access a Web page by using IE7

In Windows Internet Explorer 7, you access a Web page that contains an ActiveX control. However, the ActiveX control is inactive. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

• You install a script debugger on the computer. For example, you install the Microsoft Script Debugger.

• In Internet Explorer, you clear the Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer) check box in the Browsing area on the Advanced tab in Internet Options.

An inactive ActiveX control will not respond to user interaction.
